Scale Meet, What's a FRIA??, and Building Permits

Hi Pilots!

I do hope you are getting out there with us and enjoying summer!

Scale Meet July 22

Our annual Scale Meet is on July 22.  There are two categories: one for scale buffs with more of the score going to scale appearance, and another for Everybody to enjoy.  "Scale" is 20 out of 80 possible points going to appearance.  "Anything Fun Scale" is 10 out of 70.  The "Anything Fun Scale" category can be any model that is a decent representation of a real airplane, and you can convince the judges by showing them a picture of a real one that yours is a scale model.  It does not have to be the same color or version.  Any ARF, foam, balsa, kit, or scratch built, can qualify, and nearly all the score comes from flying skill, since nearly all entrants will have about the same high static score.

We need Volunteers

.. to make the fun happen:  Registrar and Scorekeeper, Cat Herder, Static Judges, Flight Judges, and a score sheet runner.  We'll need food organizers too, but maybe not a Chef since we are thinking about ordering Pizza for lunch.  Contact the club here if you can help us!

FRIA

Marymoor RC Club will have a FRIA.  "What's that?!", you ask.  When you fly within the boundary of a FRIA, (Federally Recognized Identification Area), you will not be required to have a Remote Identification Device in your plane, helicopter or drone.  The Remote ID reports position to the FAA airspace system, and will be required outside any FRIAs in controlled airspace when the new Federal rules take effect.   AMA is helping me define a FRIA boundary for Marymoor RC Club that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) should approve.  We are close to finishing that.  Then, as for all other AMA clubs, AMA will submit the application to the FAA on our behalf.  Read the real scoop about the requirements and deadlines here.

I am proposing boundaries of the FRIA using landmarks visible or knowable by both RC and full scale pilots.  The FRIA is somewhat larger than our Park-approved boundaries so that inadvertent flight outside our normal boundaries won't cause any concern.  The larger FRIA will NOT mean that we have more space to fly than we do today, nor will it be less.  When it's all done, ideally you won't have to fly any differently than you do today.  We'll share the result as soon as it's approved.

Building Project

We continue slogging along with our New Building Project.  We are SO close to being able to send in our permit application, but recently found out that we might have to hire a civil engineer to do an official drainage assessment.  Crazy?  Yes, and we are trying to argue that there is a different regulatory path called Drainage Self Assessment for simple cases like ours.  If you know a Civil Engineer that could help us, please contact the board here.

You CAN be an Instructor!

What is the greatest thing you can do for our hobby?  Our Summer Tuesday Evening training program is going well, but we still really need instructors. It is not that difficult.  You don't have to be an amazing pilot.  And you don't have to do it every Tuesday.  You can pick your days.  Please consider helping, and contact us here if you can.

Happy Landings,

Brian D. Kelly (BK1)
