PRESIDENT’S MESSSAGE 2010-NO. 3

FLIGHT BOUNDARIES AND NOISE: The Park has received yet another formal complaint about model noise from the condos east of our field.  The model in question was observed to be far beyond the tree line to the East by the wife of one of our Club members. The pilot is unknown at this time.

Although it is legal to fly a model that exceeds 90DbA until 1 September, doing so fails to appreciate the fact that we have active opponents who are formally objecting to our activities-and they are not waiting until September to see what happens.

Deliberately flying beyond the limits set for the flying area also clearly indicates a lack of concern for the problems we have with the surrounding community.  Flying outside the boundaries calls immediate attention to the model and the noise it is generating-within the noise limits or not. It is my opinion that most of our problems with the surrounding community are as much related to over flight as they are to noise alone.  I will repeat what I have said before: If we value our field-we must stay within the noise and boundary limits and we must not tolerate anyone who does not.

Dumb Stuff: It has been reported to me that someone took off a helicopter from a flight line table, flew around and then returned to the table to land. This is so incredibly uncaring of the safety of others that it defies understanding-beside the fact that these actions willfully violate both the AMA safety code and our field rules.  Your Board is pursuing this incident with the intention of positively preventing any recurrence.
